| Southport Spring Spectacular & 3/50 Celebration |
| Southport Merchants and Downtown Southport, Inc. have joined forces to welcome the impending vernal equinox and celebrate the launch of the 3/50 program, which encourages people to support their local merchants.
Participating Southport Merchants will be offering shopping specials for their customers on Friday March 19th & Saturday, March 20th with business hours on both days from 10am-6pm. After the shops close at 6pm on Saturday there will be a celebration at Franklin Square Park featuring music by the Fort Johnston Bluegrass Band, food and refreshments by Knott's Landing Cafe' & Grill, Loco Jo's Grill, Port City Java and various local church groups. All food and beverage will be by donation, but the event is free. Please bring a blanket, lawn chair or other mode of comfort so you can sit a while and enjoy the festivities. Families, singles, couples, kids, teens are invited to attend.
Many of the participating merchants have graciously donated items for a well-stuffed gift basket that will be given to the lucky winner of a drawing to be held in the park at 6:30pm on Saturday. Free tickets for the drawing are available from participating merchants only during the 2 days of the event.

| The 3/50 program is the brainchild of Cinda Baxter, a former small retail store owner and currently a retail consultant, who wanted to spread the word about the win-win situation when folks shop at their local merchants. it has been initiated in our area by the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce.
The 3 in 3/50 comes from choosing 3 merchants in your town that you'd miss if they went out of business. 50 is $50, the suggested amount of money to spend each month. The effect on the local economy is profound.

| Have we got a fish story for you.....Oak Island Parks & Recreation Department is offering the second annual fishing program called WAIT!: "Women Anglers In Training”. The “WAIT!” program is for women only and promises to put participants at ease and develop their potential as anglers. We have created a stress free environment where women can ask questions and try their hand at a variety of angling activities. This two-day experience will introduce surf fishing, pier fishing, bottom fishing, tying lures, using bait, casting, maneuvering a boat, and much more. The event concludes with a daylong fishing trip. This is the only all-women fishing instruction weekend held in North Carolina. |

| The four-hour behind-the-scenes exploration of un-restored areas of the ship includes the brig, the fire control tower, and SO much more! Fee $45. Fee does NOT include admission to the ship for the regular tour. Friends of the Battleship members and active military are $35. You must be 12 years or older to participate. Be prepared for extensive climbing. Wear comfortable, warm, washable clothing and sturdy, rubber-soled shoes. Bring a camera, but no large backpacks. Pre-registration and payment required by Wednesday, November 5. There will be no walk up tickets available. |
