Southport Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce has an exciting lineup of special events for the public including the Christmas by the Sea Parade, Coastal Consumer Showcase, , Oak Island Lighthouse 5k, 10k and Half Marathon, Christmas Gift Show, U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament, N.C. 4th of July Festival and Southport Oak Island Golf Classic.
The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce held its last It’s Worth the Drive Go Local Carpool on April 4th in anticipation of the opening of the G.V. Barbee Bridge to Oak Island. The Carpool was one of the Chamber’s activities that encouraged residents to make the extra effort to support local businesses during the temporary closing of the bridge. The Carpool also served as a fun, informative way to showcase the products and services offered by our business community while trumpeting the good work of community organizations. Southport Oak Island Chamber of Commerce-Welcome Center monthly It's Worth The Drive Go Local Passport Drawings was held on March 1st. Rita Cassidy of Oak Island won the March Drawing for $100. The last of the drawings will be held on May 1st. To enter the drawing, simply stop by the Chamber’s Welcome Center (4433 Long Beach Road) Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:30am-5:00pm and show receipts from purchases in April from ten different businesses.
The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce has just received 45,000 copies of the 2019 “Picture Perfect” Living and Recreating Guide for the Southport-Oak Island area. The 48-page guide is the only guide published by the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce. The annual guide contains useful information for visitors and residents about Bald Head Island, Boiling Spring Lakes, Bolivia, Caswell Beach, Oak Island, Southport, St. James and Sunset Harbor.

Southport, NC – The 2019 Coastal Consumer Showcase drew a large crowd as an estimated 700 people attended the annual event held at the St. James Community Center.
59 businesses were available to answer questions about the products and services they provide to our Southport-Oak Island Area residents daily. Residents and visitors who attended the show were encouraged to register for a chance to win $100 and numerous prizes in the Pick-A-Prize Auction. Thirty-six students at South Brunswick Middle School were honored on Friday, March 15th for being “Good Neighbors” in their school and in their communities. Honorees, along with their families, were invited to attend the award ceremony which took place in the school’s media center. Breakfast was shared while guest speaker Colonel Heather J. Carlisle, Commander of Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point shared what it means to be a good neighbor. Colonel Carlisle used a story of a boy helping stranded starfish to illustrate the importance of the actions of one person and how it can make a positive difference in the world. The Southport Oak Island Chamber of Commerce-Welcome Center provided additional funding to Brunswick Family Assistance for ongoing Hurricane Relief efforts from funding by the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament. Martin Register, 2018 & 2019 US Open KMT Chair presented a check for $5,400 to Charles “G” Jackson, Program Manager for Brunswick Family Assistance. This donation with prior donations total almost $8,000 to assist in recovery efforts for those in our community.
Thank you to Mason Whitworth. Master Whitworth completed work on a new flag pole for the Southport Oak Island Chamber of Commerce-Welcome Center as part of his Eagle Scout Service Project. From design to leading his team to completion he was very organized and did a great job. He is part of the Scout Troop 238.
The NC 4th of July Festival Committee celebrated the kick-off of another planning year at the Cape Fear Yacht Club the first of February. The Committee meets on the first Monday of the month at 5:30pm in the Southport Oak Island Chamber of Commerce-Welcome Center Conference Room. If you would like to volunteer to serve on the Festival Committee, please feel free to attend the March 4th meeting. This year's Festival Committee Chair is Trisha Howarth.
