41st Annual Membership Meeting
Annual Meeting Serves to Honor Local Business Community

Members and staff of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce gathered at The Brunswick Center of Southport for their 41st Annual Meeting and Breakfast in June. This meeting serves as an opportunity for the entire membership to gather in fellowship and to recognize those who have gone above and beyond in their local business community.

A highlight of this year’s meeting was keynote speaker, Rachel Lewis Hilburn, Host of Coastline and News Director for WHQR. Rachel spoke on the importance of civil discourse within the community and “shaping [the community] into a place that [we are] proud of, a place that [we] love, a place [we’re] happy to be.” She then applauded those who are members of the chamber, as they take those steps to work together and build an ongoing working relationship in the community.

The meeting also serves as a platform for the gavel to be passed from the current Chamber President to the next. This year, Dr. Ali Travis (River Road Animal Hospital) had the responsibility of passing the gavel and title on to Carol Magnani (The State Port Pilot). Magnani will serve as the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce’s President for the 2016-2017 term, ending in July of 2017.

Time was taken to recognize retiring board members, newly elected board members and several award winners. The President’s Award, which is given to an individual or group that has proved an outstanding service to the community or to the Chamber, was awarded to Lucinda Arnold (Coastal Painting & Improvements) for her start-up and continued support of the Chamber’s Business Connection program. Jackie Cooper (Cooper Electric) was recognized as Ambassador of the Year, where she earned points by representing the chamber at ribbon cuttings, visiting fellow members, and attending various events. Small Business Awards were awarded to Jonathan Peele and Staff at Coastline Insurance & Associate of NC as well as Family Chiropractic Plus.

The 41st Annual Membership Meeting of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce was sponsored by AT&T & BEMC.
