Shop Small
Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses nationwide.  It is called Shop Small Saturday.   American Express launched the first ever Shop Small Saturday in 2010 with the U.S. Senate unanimously passing a resolution recognizing Small Business Saturday in 2011.   The movement has grown over the years with over $15.4 billion dollars spent in 2016 and over 95 million people shopping in their communities during the 2015 Small Business Saturday®.

The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce joined the movement as a neighborhood champion in 2010 and has been leading the way promoting Shop Small Saturday for the Southport-Oak Island area ever since.

Some merchants during the Southport-Oak Island Christmas Gift Show on Saturday, November 18th from 3pm-6pm and Sunday, November 19th from 1pm-4pm at the St. James Community Center will distribute special Shop Small Saturday coupons.

The Chamber
has posted an “Online Christmas Directory” with holiday hours of our member shops and suggestions on great gift ideas you can purchase from our local small businesses at   There will also be information on which small businesses will be hosting an Open House on Shop Small Saturday.

We urge you to become an active participant in Shop Small Saturday so that all our area shops and restaurants can benefit.  “Let’s light up social media by taking selfies at local small businesses on Saturday, November 25th with the hashtag #ShopSmall”, encouraged Karen Sphar, Executive Vice President of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce.

There will be new offerings from the “Online Christmas Directory” posted daily on the Chamber’s Facebook page in November; you can request to receive the Directory E-Mail by contacting the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce at 910.457-6964 or you can visit the Chamber’s blog located on it’s website at
